About Baptism

Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.  Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Matt 28:18-20

  • Because Jesus modelled it and told us to. In the Gospels John baptised (Matthew 3:6,7,11; Mark 1:4,5,8; Luke 3:3,7,12,16; 7:29,30; John 1:25-33), Jesus was baptised (Matthew 3:13-16; Mark 1:9; Luke 3:21) and Jesus’ disciples baptised (John 3:22-26; 4:1,2). In the book of Acts everyone who started trusting Jesus was baptised almost immediately (Acts 2:28,41; 8:12,36,38; 9:18; 10:47,48; 16:14,15,31-33; 18:8).
  • Jesus told His disciples to baptize new believers as an integral part of making them disciples. Baptism into Christ Jesus is symbolic of our old lives being being buried with Him in order that we might rise with Him to live a new life (Romans 6:3,4; Colossians 2:12).

Baptism is an outward expression of an inward decision to follow Jesus.
If you’ve put your trust in Him and committed to living for Him, baptism is your next step. It’s a public declaration of your allegiance to Christ and a powerful moment of celebration with your church family.

We encourage everyone who has made this decision to be baptised as soon as they can.

You can choose to be baptised during one of our regular Sunday services, at a special baptism service, or in a more private setting; like a beach, a backyard pool, or with a small group of close friends and family. The setting is up to you, what matters is the heart behind it.

When being baptised you will ask you two questions like the following;
(i) Do you believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that he lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose again, paying for your sins and paving the way for your eternal life with him?
(ii) With God’s help, are you committed to following Jesus all the days of your life?

Once you answer “yes” to each of these, your baptiser will say “Then on your confession of faith I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”, then you’ll get dipped (usually backwards) into the water, and be raised again where your baptiser or someone else you’ve requested will pray for you, then you can get out and get changed.

You may or may not feel different after baptism. The transforming work of God in your life is already happening; baptism is just acknowledgement of that. Having said that, you may experience a new understanding or feeling from God through your baptism. Whatever happens, we’ll all be celebrating God’s goodness to you as you move forward in this journey of trusting Jesus.

Wear something modest and comfortable that you don’t mind getting wet, something that won’t cling or become see-through when soaked. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes, including dry shoes.

Want to be baptised?

We'd love to hear from you
